dvbrewer
Quite a few satellite channels here in the UK are set at 4:3 but actually transmit permanently 16:9 content- it would be great if there was a setting in the channellist editor where you could force a ratio for different channels. Or, perhaps there is already a way to do this by editing some files in the DVBViewer folders? Edited May 31, 2009 by dvbrewer Quote Link to comment
schlemiel
I would also like to see this very much OR a feature that remembers the zoom of every channel. (Like the volume) Quote Link to comment

schlemiel
I´m in Brazil and watch the Dutch channel 'BVN' on SatMex6, so i guess that´s not an option for you. But BVN is also broadcasted on Astra1 so you could try to check there. I contacted BVN about this. They said it should come thru as 16:9, but some decoders thínk it's 4:3. I tried a dreambox and now the KNC-ONE and both say it's 4:3, so i guess the problem is at their end. Quote Link to comment
dvbrewer
Which channels on which frequency? I'd like to check it. All on Eurobird 1 (28.5), Simply Movies on 11343V, World Movies on 12643V , SuperCasino on 11661H. For SuperCasino and Simply Movies all programming is formatted for 16:9 but flagged 4:3. For World Movies, the majority is formatted for 16:9, but a small amount of films are letterboxed for 4:3, but I would still like to default to 16:9, and if it is wrong I can change it manually. Thanks for your interest . Edited June 8, 2009 by dvbrewer Quote Link to comment

Griga
I see what you mean. They are switching wildly between 16:9 in a 4:3 container (preferably ads with broadcasted black bars, but the aspect ratio is ok) and true anamorphic 16:9 wrongly flagged as 4:3. In this case the aspect ratio is not ok. it would be great if there was a setting in the channellist editor where you could force a ratio for different channels. I'm not directly involved in DVBViewer Pro development, but I don't think it will happen, since it isn't DVBViewer's task to compensate each and every bad broadcasting habit. You know, some people want brightness/contrast per channel, others zoom presets per channel, you want aspect ratio per channel... in the end it would blow up the UI intolerably. So I'd say accept that you have to correct it manually for these few channels... Quote Link to comment

Hmm, I still think it would be a good feature to implement as as far as I can see there is no way to switch from auto to 16:9 with one remote press, you have to press a button 4 times to get to 16:9 then twice again to get back to auto .... Valts
Another note about aspect ratios and zoom, for TV channels they 99% work damn fine actually. But when I go to playback some video quite often it goes a bit wrong. For example in case of 512x384 (perfect 4:3) I end up with picture that's not reaching top and bottom of the screen (16:9 1080p). While obviously there's plenty of room left on the sides. So I end up with 4 black borders. So I go adjust pan&scan... so I don't see why with default settings it goes wrong. Edited June 11, 2009 by Valts Quote Link to comment
Griga
I still think it would be a good feature to implement Well, I have about 3000 channels in my list (among them Astra/Eurobird 28° East channels), and I would need this feature for let's say only 3 of them (0.3 percent) that I never watch. Most users don't need this feature at all. In most cases the additional UI and code would be useless overhead that has to be "payed" by all users. So under this economical point of view... forget it. However, there is another possible solution that came to my mind this morning: A plug-in that patches the video headers of certain pre-defined channels to 16:9 in the incoming stream. The user would have to provide a list (as text resp. INI file) containing some significant parameters of these channels, like Service ID, Video PID... the plug-in starts working when it recognizes one of these channels. It would additionally patch recordings from the played channel (no background recordings, however). This solution requires no additional UI and no code overhead in DVBViewer. So I end up with 4 black borders. So I go adjust pan&scan That's when the broadcaster puts a 16:9 source into a 4:3 picture. The black bars at the top and bottom are part of the picture (DVBViewer can't see them), the bars at the left and right are there because DVBViewer tries to display 4:3 correctly in a 16:9 area. Use the zoom presets (see recall #0, #1... in the zoom settings) for fast adjustment. AFAIK they are accessible via RC, but ATM I can't remember how... Quote Link to comment

Griga
Ok, a proof-of-concept-plugin already patches the Simply Movies and World Movies video headers successfully to 16:9. It works like this: I go to the DVBViewer channel editor, select the channel in question, export it as INI file (containing all channel parameters), open the file with a text editor, add an "PatchType=16:9" entry, rename the file to *.patch, store it in the DVBViewer configuration folder, re-launch DVBViewer, the plugin reads all *.patch files, creates a list of the contained channels, I tune one of them, the plugin recognizes it and does its job. However, since it is supposed to become an all-purpose stream patcher plugin for curing bad broadcasting habits, some careful design and functionality checking is pending now... Quote Link to comment

Griga
What other things are you looking to fix? E.g. the wrong BBC HD AC3 PES start codes. any idea why all the WMV clips shown on this page shows as 4:3 in DVBViewer I've downloaded the Dolphins 720p sample, and here DVBViewer Pro/GE play it as 16:9. The video decoder is WMVideo Decoder DMO, and the source filter/splitter the WM ASF Reader (both MS stuff, visible under View -> Filters resp. in GraphStudio -> Connect to Remote Graph). WMV is not handled explicitely by DVBViewer. Playback is more or less delegated to DirectShow. It is up to the splitter filter to detect the resolution/aspect ratio correctly and expose the values on the video output pin, where DVBViewer picks them up. Quote Link to comment
Griga
It's time for a beta test: The StreamPatcher Plugin 1.0.0 is available in the members area, beta section. Do the following: 1) Store the StreamPatcher.dll in DVBViewer\Plugins. If you want it to patch the stream for background recording (of channels that are not viewed while recording), create additional folders within the plugin folder according to these instructions and store a copy of the DLL in each of them. However, this will not work with DVBViewer GE. In DVBViewer GE channels will only be patched while they are viewed. 2) The ZIP additionally contains *.patch files. That are (renamed) INI files exported from the DVBViewer channel editor with an additional entry. Store them in the DVBViewer Configuration Folder (see About Menu in DVBViewer Pro). - SuperCasino.patch contains all channels on Eurobird 1 that need a 16:9 patch (Simply Movies on 11343V, World Movies on 12643V , SuperCasino on 11661H). - BBC HD (AC3).patch contains the BBC HD AC3 track data. It will let the plugin correct the wrong AC3 PES startcodes (see here) in the incoming stream, so you don't have to aftertreat the recordings anymore. 3) Launch DVBViewer and try... The plugin will show up as "Stream Patcher" in the Plugins Menu (only the instance responsible for the viewed channel). If no patching is going on, the item is disabled, otherwise enabled and checkmarked, allowing to switch patching off and on. For creating your own patch files do the following: 1) Export the channel(s) in question from the DVBViewer channel editor as INI file(s). 2) Open them with a text editor. Add the desired patch type. It can be done in two different ways: - "Globally" for all channels contained in the file by adding a [Patch] section and within this section the PatchType entry, e.g. [Patch] PatchType=16:9 - Individually for a single channel by adding the PatchType entry to the channel data section, e.g [Channel0] PatchType=16:9 ........ Other supported PatchType identifiers are 4:3, AC3PES and ScrambledFlag (remedy against lazy CAMs spoiling recordings, see here). 3) Rename the edited files from *.ini to *.patch and store them in the DVBViewer Configuration Folder (see above). The Plugin reads all *.patch files when DVBViewer is launched and creates a list of all contained channels and audio tracks. Whenever a channel is tuned, the plugin scans the list and patches the video and/or audio stream(s) if it finds the channel in the list. Please note: If the channel data changes (different Service ID, TransportStream ID, PMT PID, Video PID, Audio PID, Frequency...) the patch file must be updated! Quote Link to comment

I tried it- there are a couple of issues, first the plugin does not seem to be active for BBC HD at all, I noticed FEC in the patch file is 3 but in channel editor is 5/6 - is this the problem? Also if you switch from BBC HD to Simply Movies, World Movies or SuperCasino the aspect patch does not work, it will work going from any other channel. I notice that World Movies seems to be inconsistent, some of their movies do seem to be formatted for 16:9 (but flagged 4:3), but some are letterboxed in 4:3, maybe it would better to remove this from the patch because it might be a pain if you want to zoom a letterbox and it is in 16:9 so you have to change aspect first and then zoom? Many music channels (Brit Asia TV, Channel AKA, Clubland, Starz) also seem to be inconsistent, all are flagged 4:3, often show 16:9 formatted videos, but sometimes letterboxed content . Maybe for these inconsistent channels it would be better to allow a quick toggle shortcut between Auto and 16:9? Currently I can only see a way to cycle through all the aspect ratio options which is somewhat tedious. A couple more channels that are consistent and can be added to the patch: Monte Carlo TV on 11546H (formatted for 16:9, flagged 4:3) WatchmeTV.TV aka Psychic & Soul on 11343V (formatted for 16:9, flagged 4:3) Quote Link to comment
Griga
first the plugin does not seem to be active for BBC HD at all How do you know? I've just checked it again with a BBC HD recording and a hex viewer - here it works. All 00 00 01 C0 PES startcodes were replaced by 00 00 01 BD. Does the Stream Patcher item in the plugins menu show a checkmark after tuning BBC HD? I noticed FEC in the patch file is 3 but in channel editor is 5/6 - is this the problem? No. The plugin compares the Tuner Type (DVB-S/T/C), Transportstream ID, Service ID, PMT PID, Video PID, Symbolrate, Frequency (with a +/- 2 MHz tolerance), Polarisation. Also if you switch from BBC HD to Simply Movies, World Movies or SuperCasino the aspect patch does not work, it will work going from any other channel. Confirmed. Seems to be a DVBViewer Pro issue. In DVBViewer GE it works. Maybe Lars knows why... @Lars: It doesn't work if channel switching implies rebuilding the filter graph (radio -> World Movies or H.264 -> World Movies), but it works on second tuning. maybe it would better to remove this from the patch A couple more channels that are consistent and can be added to the patch Feel free to do it. Yeah my fault, I messed up the order of plugin calls. the evtunerset gets called after the (hardware) tunersetting but before the graph is eventually torn down with a accompaning stopgraph to the plugin This does only influence the main playback, background recordings are not affected. Griga
there seems to be an incompatibility with ffdshow and MPC and DVBViewer for these videos. I'd say ffdshow somehow overrides the DVBViewer attempts to control the aspect ratio. Maybe you have to change one of the countless ffdshow options. Another possibility would be to change the DirectShow merit values of the decoders, so that the MS decoder becomes the first choice. Not so easy with DMOs. The current RadLight Filter Manager release doesn't suppot it yet. However, I've already uploaded an update (without announcing it), that is able to deal with DMOs: http://www.DVBViewer.com/griga/rlfm_bin1_6_1.zip the stream patcher is not ticked when tuning BBC HD Some channel data difference, I guess. Compare it, or create your own patch file by exporting BBC HD (AC3) as INI and adding the PatchType entry. A hint for aspect ratio patching: For me it was quite easy to export all to-be-patched channels to one ini file because I've implemented multi-selection in the DVBViewer GE channellist lately (not yet released). In DVBViewer Pro I would do it in the following way: 1) Select one of the channels in the DVBViewer Pro channel editor and give it a new (not yet existing) category name. Click Apply. DVBViewer will create the new category. 2) Drag & drop the other channels into this category. 3) Select the category and export it (resp. all contained channels) as INI. After that, click the "Reload channellist" tool button to return to the previous state. 4) Add [Patch] PatchType=16:9 in the INI export, rename it to .patch, store it in the configuration folder. Compare it, or create your own patch file by exporting BBC HD (AC3) as INI and adding the PatchType entry. I think it is the DiseqC as I have no switch, in your patch DiseqC=9, DiseqCValue=282, I changed both to 0, now it seems to be working - stream patcher is ticked on BBC HD . Unfortunately the bug is still there if you switch from BBC HD to an aspect ratio patched channel- can this be fixed? If it's too hard don't bother, I can just go to another channel first. H.264 video headers are compressed and must be unpacked before you can change them, the flag is not located at a fixed offset, it is part of a data section that may or may not be present... after I had learned how to read (not yet to write!) H.264 sequence parameter sets I knew why H.264 software decoders are so damned slow. This bitstream format is designed for dedicated DSPs, not for Intel CPUs. BTW: Aspect ratio patching only works for MPEG2, not for H.264. Now you know why Quote Link to comment

wlx
I'm using DVBViewer in a 4:3 main monitor. I see the theatre view (full screen) in a secondary monitor which is 16:9. I think could be useful to set one aspect ratio option more in the configuration menu. You can select 4:3, 14:9, 16:9, 2,35:1 and Auto/nothing. When the signal from sat is in 16:9, I see black horizontal bars in my main 4:3 monitor, so the 16:9 monitor shows video horizontally extended. I think, if DVBViewer includes an option to select aspect ratio 1:1 in the configuration /aspect ratio menu I could see full 16:9 video in my secondary monitor. It could be simple to set up, and it could let to use all the surface without distorsion video in a 16:9 monitor. Quote Link to comment

Open_Access_3.ini Yes it does work, you need to change the .ini file to a .patch file, and put this line at the top: [Patch] PatchType=16:9 then put in the DVBViewer config folder, and put the Streampatcher.dll in the DVBViewer program files/program data plugins folder .
